Cuba reactivates wildlife protection measures

HAVANA, Cuba, Mar 2 (ACN) Cuba will launch tomorrow a special action plan for the protection of Cuban wildlife, scheduled to be completed on April 20, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).

Its implementation has been assigned to national organizations in coordination with the Office of Nuclear Regulation and Safety (ORSA)—CITES Management Authority in Cuba—and the Ministry of Science, Technology and the Environment.

The involved entities include, among others, the Cuban Zoology and Botany Societies, the “Antonio Núñez Jiménez” Foundation of Nature and Man, the Ariguanabo Foundation, and the School of Biology of the University of Havana.

Cuba is a signatory to the CITES Convention, established at a meeting of representatives from 80 countries, held in Washington D.C., U.S.A., on March 3, 1973 and entered into force on July 1, 1975.
World Wildlife Day 2023, which marks five decades since the signing of CITES, is celebrated today, March 3 with the theme “Partnerships for Wildlife Conservation”.
