GUANTANAMO, Cuba, July 11 (ACN) The University of Medical Sciences of Guantanamo (UCMG by its Sapanish acronym)) will graduate 23 foreign students from the Latin American School of Medicine (ELAM by its Spanish acronym), coming from six Caribbean countries and three African nations, on July 21, after passing the state exam for the degree course.
The graduates come from St. Lucia, Jamaica, St. Kitts and Nevis, Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, Bahamas, Burkina Fasso, Sierra Leone and Tanzania, said Yamilka Pelegrin Amondaray, secretary general of the University.
At a ceremony to be held at the Theater of the Center for Higher Studies of the province, the graduates will receive their respective Doctor of Medicine degrees, four will be awarded the Gold Degree and one will be recognized as the most comprehensive graduate of another nationality.
With the new group of doctors, the historical number of graduates from other countries in Guantanamo, in the courses of Medical Sciences, will rise this year to 794 young people of 50 nationalities, of which 764 are doctors, 11 nurses and 19 graduates in Health Technologies.
The graduates of the ELAM, founded on November 15, 1999 by Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro Ruz, historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, currently serve in clinics, medical posts, hospitals, hygiene centers, some have become ministers of health in their countries, have held other responsibilities in the government or have turned to research.
