Cuba continues assisting Haitians who landed on coast of central province of the country

CIEGO DE AVILA, Cuba, Feb 11 (ACN) About 300 migrants from Haiti, who landed on the shores of Ciego de Avila in the early morning of February 9, while trying to reach the United States, are receiving attention from the Red Cross, until they can safely return to their country.

According to the digital site Invasor, the group of 292 people, including 56 children, arrived in Paredon Grande key, aboard a precarious boat after five days at sea and lacking food and water.

Accompanied by rescuers, the migrants remain in Ceballos 8, a former school in the countryside, being transformed into housing for workers, where they receive assistance.

Ania Rosa Francisco Malde, vice governor in the province, explained to the website that they are offered breakfast, lunch, meals and snacks.

Also, she said, they have toiletries, sheets, towels, water, medical services and other actions are being coordinated to guarantee their welfare, while new rooms are being prepared to facilitate their stay.

Ileana Fuentes Torres, secretary general of the Red Cross in Ciego de Avila, noted that among the services offered to them is the taking of samples to detect malaria and COVID 19, as well as the Restoration of Family Contact to communicate through two phones enabled and give signs of life.

Last October, the Red Cross assisted another group of 50 migrants on their return to Haiti, after 25 days in Ciego de Avila, where they landed when their attempt to reach Florida, failed.
