Havana, Nov 9 (ACN) Cuban Education minister Ena Elsa Velazquez reiterated her country’s commitment to the United Nations Education, Science and Culture Organization –UNESCO- and the 2030 Agenda during a meeting on Tuesday with Stefania Giannini, assistant director-general for Education at the UN organization.
The Cuban government official affirmed the island’s willingness to contribute its experience in Education and stressed the leadership of the organization and the significance of several educative initiatives as part of efforts against the COVID-19 pandemic.
Minister Velazquez also underscored Cuba’s participation in all virtual meetings called by UNESCO, which she described as crucial to exchange on different actions taken in other contexts and she went on to explain about the measures taken in Cuba to guarantee the continuity of education after schools shut down due to the COVID-19 spread and the access to inclusive, free and high-quality education.
She also explained about the progressive return of students to in-person school attendance and added that all students and teachers will be vaccinated with locally developed vaccines.
The UNESCO official on her part acknowledged the efforts made in Cuba and the achievements reached; she also stressed the supportive tradition and international cooperation of the Caribbean island nation in the education sector.
The two officials agreed to the significance of cooperation, particularly to meet the challenges posed by the pandemic.
