HAVANA, Cuba, Oct 26 (ACN) The director of the Center for Research on the World Economy (CIEM by its Spanish acronym), Ramon Pichs, denounced the negative impact of the U.S. economic, commercial and financial blockade on the implementation of his country's climate agenda.
Speaking on Monday at the virtual event "Impact of unilateral coercive measures on the implementation of the Paris Agreement and on the Right to Sustainable Development", the Cuban academician said that such U.S. policy constitutes the main obstacle to face climate change.
As reported on Twitter by the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America - Peoples' Trade Treaty (ALBA-TCP), organizer of the event, Pichs noted that after six decades of the blockade, 70 % of the Cuban population has been born under its effects, and in that time it has cost the country 147. 8 billion dollars.
He also condemned the hurdles imposed by the blockade on access to new technologies, and referred to the effects on the bilateral agreements signed by Cuba with other Latin American countries, which has harmed the medical care of some 67 million people.
The event, which was of an academic nature, was part of the debates prior to the United Nations Climate Change Conference in 2021 (COP26).
