HAVANA, Cuba, Oct 1 (ACN) The social and humanistic sciences are called to play a key role in the post-pandemic recovery of COVID-19, said Elba Rosa Perez Montoya, Cuban minister of science, technology and environment (CITMA by its Spanish acronym), in a virtual event.
Perez Montoya spoke Friday at the opening ceremony of the Virtual Panel: Social Sciences and COVID-19 in the Greater Caribbean. Lessons learned and proposals for action, where she said that both disciplines constitute an essential tool for the design of more effective actions.
The Cuban Academy of Sciences also informed that the minister mentioned in this sense aspects such as economic recovery, attention to psychological after-effects in all age ranges of the population, the reduction of inequalities or the reactivation of teaching activities.
She underlined the recognition of the Cuban State leadership and the researchers in the humanities for their contribution, from the very beginning, to the fight against the pandemic in the country.
Perez Montoya also denounced Cuba has been affected by the opportunistic tightening of the U.S. economic, commercial and financial blockade against Cuba and the introduction of the 243 measures promoted by Donald Trump and maintained intact by the current Democratic
administration.
The event was convened by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment, along with the Cuban National Commission for UNESCO and its Regional Office for Culture for Latin America and the Caribbean in Havana.
Professionals from Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, Uruguay and Cuba attended as speakers.
This event is part of the region's preparations for the World Colloquium on Social Sciences and COVID-19. Lessons Learned and Proposals for Action, to be held on October 21 and 22 in Paris, France.
