MATANZAS, Cuba, Aug 19 (ACN) Volunteering for the fight against COVID-19 in a field hospital is an exercise of trust in the medical team, young Journalism student Adrián Calderín Lozano, who has been in the Red Zone, told ACN.
“We know that by enlisting voluntarily we are getting ourselves in harm’s way, but we learn to trust each other. We are not scared to death because we have each other’s back and follow the health protocols to the letter. We are doing our best here to that end,” he remarked.
“We all carry out the same tasks, from cleaning and doing the dishes to delivering meals. The most difficult parts are the constant danger, seeing a patient getting worse, and being worried about our family back home,” Adrián commented. “And I always fear that my colleagues might get infected. We stick to the health protocols, but we all keep an eye out for the others to make sure that they do too.”
They share out the assignments to beat exhaustion, although they work hard every day. They are afraid, but also hopeful that their patients will finally test negative to the virus and get dismissed.
Calderín Lozano arrived in this field hospital last week, and today he should be at Playa Larga, in the Zapata Swamp, to do his mandatory isolation stint. On the fifth day, he will have a PCR test which he expects to beat and go back home on the 25th, after having learned many lessons of life.
