U.S. Nobel Laureate to receive university degree today

HAVANA, Cuba, Nov 4 (ACN) The University of Havana will bestow today a degree honoris causa on the U.S. biologist and university professor Peter Courtland Agre, winner of the 2003 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

In 2015, during one of his visits to Havana, Dr. Agre—who is also a Corresponding Member of the Cuban Academy of Sciences, a category granted to experts not residing in the island who have made outstanding contributions to scientific development—received an honorary plaque for the 280th anniversary of the University of Havana in recognition of his relevant work in the field of science.

A member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Dr. Agre (Northfield, Minnesota, January 30, 1949) won the Nobel Prize for his contribution to the discovery of aquaporin, channel proteins that move water molecules through the cell membrane.

The U.S. expert is the current director of the Malaria Research Institute of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University, Maryland.
