European Union demands end of U.S. blockade

HAVANA, Cuba, Oct 30 (ACN) Represented by Hungary at the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), the EU Member States voted unanimously in favor of the resolution to end the U.S. economic, commercial and financial blockade of Cuba.

The EU representative referred to the extraterritorial nature of the said policy and its impact on the regional bloc in violation of the rules of international trade and underscored her opposition to the activation of Titles III and IV of the Helms-Burton Act in 2019, which also affects EU economic interests.

She remarked that the blockade hinders Cuba's ability to import, among others, pharmaceutical and medical supplies, and referred to the effects on Cuban citizens of the country's inclusion on the list of State Sponsors of Terrorism and other judicial and administrative measures.

Likewise, the Hungarian official recalled that the fourth human rights dialogue held in November 2023, derived from the EU-Cuba Political Dialogue and Cooperation Agreement, addressed potential cooperation projects in various areas of human rights, including food, housing, health, energy, culture, environment, climate change, citizen participation, and attention to people in vulnerable situations.

The representative emphasized that the EU offers Cuba with the Political Dialogue and Cooperation Agreement a solid and reliable alliance to accompany it in its search for reforms to pursue sustainable development and find common solutions to global challenges.

Through this agreement, she pointed out, the EU offers Cuba a consistent and reliable partnership to support it as it seeks to pursue sustainable development and to find common solutions to global challenges.

By way of conclusion, she said that the U.S. blockade and connected measures do not contribute to promoting these aims; on the contrary, they impede their achievement. Therefore, the Member States of the European Union expressed once again its support to the Cuban people.
