Angola reiterates its opposition to U.S. blockade of Cuba

HAVANA, Cuba, Oct 30 (ACN) At the United Nations General Assembly, where debate is taking place prior to the vote on the draft resolution on the blockade, the Angolan representative expressed the concern of a large part of the international community over the non-fulfillment of the entity’s will on the issue and the persistence of unjustified sanctions against Cuba.

The diplomat pointed out in his speech that this is one of today’s hottest topics worldwide, given the economic and social effects of the said hostile policy on the Cuban people and the refusal of the U.S. to end it at once, and remarked that the extraterritorial nature of such unilateral coercive measures prevent both the implementation of macroeconomic programs for recovery and the island’s full participation in the world market.

He described the 60-plus years old siege imposed by the U.S. as incompatible with international law and the respect for the human rights of the affected population, as these sanctions, together with the arbitrary inclusion of Cuba in the list of state sponsors of terrorism, hinder the purchase of basic supplies, food, medicines and the fuel required to renovate the National Power Grid and keep it operational.

The Angolan official urged the U.S. to relinquish immediately and unconditionally its aggressive posture and try instead to promote sovereign equality for the benefit of both peoples and the world in general.
