Ceasefire in Gaza must be permanent, Cuban FM states

HAVANA, Cuba, Mar 26 (ACN) Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla, Cuban foreign minister, said that the resolution approved in the UN Security Council does not demand a permanent ceasefire in Gaza, something that Cuba considers urgent.

On X, Cuban diplomat pointed out that the ceasefire stipulated in the resolution is only for the month of Ramadan, and in spite of that, the US was the only country that did not support it.

Over the past few months, the U.S. has blocked three resolutions before the Security Council proposing an Israeli ceasefire against Gaza.

On Monday, however, the US abstained from voting on a new resolution, calling for an immediate ceasefire during the month of Ramadan and leading to a lasting ceasefire, and also demanding the return of all hostages, which passed with 14 votes in favor and none against.
The humanitarian situation in Gaza has reached the dimensions of a humanitarian catastrophe, warn international organizations.

In this regard, in the same social network, Rodriguez Parrilla pointed out that one out of every three children under two years of age is currently suffering from acute malnutrition in northern Gaza.

The obstacles imposed on the entry of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip is another part of the genocide committed by Israel against the people of Palestine, the Cuban foreign minister denounced in his message on the social network.

The text of the resolution, which was prepared by the 10 non-permanent members of the Council, also stresses the urgent need to expand the flow of humanitarian assistance and strengthen the protection of civilians in the Gaza Strip and calls for lifting all barriers to this humanitarian aid.

Russia called for a separate vote to introduce the word "permanent" after the ceasefire, as using the term "durable" would allow Israel to continue the war later, but that amendment was not adopted.

After the vote, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said on X that the long-awaited resolution must be implemented and that failing to do so would be unforgivable.

The war that began almost six months ago has caused more than 32,000 deaths, has left more than one million people (almost half of the Gazans) in a state of extreme food insecurity, and the Palestinian territory in an unprecedented level of destruction.
