Cuba reiterates its stance in favor of peace and development in Haiti

HAVANA, Cuba, Mar 19 (ACN) Rodolfo Benitez Verson, Cuban deputy national coordinator for the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac), reiterated Cuba's position in favor of peace, stability and development in Haiti and the defense of the legitimate right to find a peaceful and sustainable solution to the challenges it faces.

As reported by the foreign ministry on its website, during the diplomat's intervention at the urgent consultation meeting of the Celac National Coordinators on the situation in Haiti, he insisted on the need to establish effective aid mechanisms that guarantee the efficient use of resources for Haitians.

The sister nation of Haiti is suffering a serious multidimensional crisis that exacerbates social instability, poverty and underdevelopment caused by centuries of colonial and neocolonial plunder and foreign meddling, he said.

Cuban diplomat recalled that Cuba has provided solidarity and selfless cooperation to Haiti for many years and has maintained an uninterrupted health brigade of professionals and technicians with the Haitian people since 1998.

In spite of the current serious security situation, we maintain 60 health collaborators there, part of them in the south of Haiti and the rest in Port-au-Prince, likewise, young Haitians continue their university education in Cuba, he explained.

Benitez Verson assured that a lasting and permanent solution can only come from the Haitian context, without foreign meddling, which has never been the solution, but the cause of the problems.

The main pending task of the international community with Haiti is not to send a military contingent, he added.

The diplomat proposed to evaluate, in the shortest possible time, 10 concrete actions to be undertaken by Celac, regarding the situation of the Caribbean country, including assistance to its population, avoiding military interventions, creating a solidarity fund and providing health support.
