UN to Set up Humanitarian Air Bridge between Haiti and Dom. Republic

Havana, March 14 (ACN) The United Nations will set up an “air bridge” between Haiti and the Dominican Republic to favor the arrival of humanitarian aid to Haitians under the current crisis, the UN mission in Pout-au-Prince announced.  https://shorturl.at/hkCE0
UN food agency director in Haiti, Jean-Martin Bauer said that earlier this week four million citizens were facing “severe food insecurity” in Haiti, while one million people are on the brink of famine.

In a virtual press conference cited by Haitian media outlets, Bauer said that the increase of gang violence has worsened the situation by displacing another 15 thousand citizens just during the first weekend of March in Port-au-Prince.

The total number of displaced persons in Haiti has surpassed 360 thousand, out of a population of 11 million. Half the displaced citizens are children according to the UN, PL news agency reported from Santo Domingo.

Bauer’s statements took place when a transition presidential council is being set up to replace the government headed by Ariel Henry.

The Dominican Republic has reinforced its borders with Haiti. Last week, President Luis Abinader denied the entry to the country of Ariel Henry as the plane in which he was travelling from the United States did not have a flight plan for this nation. Before that, Henry unsuccessfully tried to enter Haiti, so he finally landed in Puerto Rico.
