Havana, March 13 (ACN) Cuba’s Foreign Ministry congratulated Pope Francis on the 11th year of his pontificate through a message on X wishing him success as head of state and spiritual leader, on behalf of the people and government of Cuba.
Jorge Mario Bergoglio was born December 17, 1936 in the capital Buenos Aries; he was appointed archbishop of the first diocese of Argentina in 1998. On March 13th, 2013, he was elected Pope following the resign of Benedict XVI.
Pope Francis visited Cuba on September 19 -22, 2015 where he officiated three holy masses. Here, he was welcomed by Army General Raul Castro; he also visited the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution Fidel Castro.
On that occasion the Pope preached homilies in the cities of Havana, Holguin and Santiago de Cuba.
