Cuba appreciates African Union resolution against US blockade

HAVANA, Cuba, Feb 19 (ACN) Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla, Cuban foreign minister, thanked today the African Union for its support against the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed more than 60 years ago on the Caribbean nation by the US government.

On X, Cuban diplomat stressed that at its 37th Summit (held on February 17 and 18 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia), the continental organization adopted for the 15th consecutive time a resolution demanding an end to Washington's blockade.

"We express our deep gratitude to our African brothers for their firm and unwavering support for the Cuban people in the face of that genocidal policy," Rodriguez Parrilla wrote.

According to the Cuban foreign minister in another message, the approved document requests for the first time the removal of Cuba from the list of state sponsors of terrorism, drawn up by the U.S. State Department.

Recently, the vice president of the African Union Commission, Monique Nsanzabaganwa, acknowledged Cuba's contribution to that organization and its members, with whom, she said, solidarity and cooperation ties have been strengthened.

On meeting with Salvador Valdes Mesa, Cuban vice president, during his tour of countries in the region last November, the representative of the African Union reiterated her support for the Caribbean island's struggle against the U.S. blockade.

Havana keeps diplomatic relations with the 55 member countries of the African Union, and according to Cuban authorities, there is a willingness to continue working in collaboration with the organization.

Currently, medical cooperation is carried out in 29 nations of the continent, and the training of professionals in Cuban universities is being developed.
