Havana, Jan 25 (ACN) United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres encourage member nations to back the multinational support force for Haiti approved by the UN Security Council with urgency.
Haiti needs assistance now, said UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric in a press conference on Thursday, as cited by PL news agency.
The head of the UN mission Maria Isabel Salvador told the Security Council that Haiti reports an unprecedented increase of kidnappings, violations and other crimes by armed gangs, which affects the life and livelihood of the people as well as access to humanitarian aid.
Salvador’s office documented over 8 thousand victims of gangs last year, including murders, wounded and kidnapped people, which stands for 122 percent if compared to 2022.
The UN representative agreed with the call by Guterres to encourage all Haitian actors involved and interested to prepare for the deployment of the Multinational Support Mission, approved last October but not yet implemented.
The deepening crisis in Haiti is not an isolated event. Illegal traffic of fire arms in the Caribbean are a growing concern and keep fueling the activity of gangs, drug trafficking, UN officials noted.
