Havana, Jan 16 (ACN) United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres and Iran’s foreign minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian addressed the current situation in the Middle East and in the Red Sea during a phone called on Tuesday.
A communique issued by UN secretary general’s spokesperson confirmed that the dialog also focused on Gaza and the need for larger access of humanitarian aid to the zone, PL news agency reported.
Guterres reiterated his call to all parties to prevent a larger escalation of violence and to implement the Security Council resolution condemning the Houthi attacks in the Red Sea.
Meanwhile, the Iranian foreign minister described the attacks by the US and the UK against Yemen as an illegitimate strategic mistake. He also affirmed his country’s stance in favor of the preservation and security of navigation and trade.
Amir Abdollahian said that by stopping the ships in route to the occupied Palestinian territories, Yemen pursues to end the crime and genocide committed by Israel against civilians in Gaza.
The illegal attacks against the Houthis by the United States and the United Kingdom constitute a strategic miscalculation which would increase tensions in the region, he said and went on to reiterate Iran’s willingness to provide humanitarian assistance to the people in the Gaza Strip.
