Cuba condemns violence in Ecuador

HAVANA, Cuba, Jan 10 (ACN) Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel expressed his opposition to the recent acts of violence in Ecuador and his solidarity with both the Ecuadorian government and the families of the resulting victims.

On his end, Cuban Minister of Foreign Affairs Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla stated his support for peace in and his solidarity with the government and people of Ecuador, currently in the grip of a wave of violence.

On Tuesday, in Guayaquil, armed gangs stormed a TV studio and the university and terrorized people in the streets, which led President Daniel Noboa to declare an internal armed conflict and order the Armed Forces to patrol the streets and crack down on criminal gangs, which he called terrorist.

So far in Guayaquil at least eight people have been killed and two injured in armed attacks, according to the mayor, Aquiles Alvarez.

Ecuador ended 2023 as the most violent country in Latin America, with more than 7,800 violent deaths, an unprecedented figure that contrasts with the drop in the national crime rate up to 2017.
