Cuba Reiterates Call for Ceasefire in Gaza at UN

Havana, Jan 9 (ACN) Cuba reiterated its call for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip at the United Nations General Assembly stressing that a ceasefire is a priority to stop the Israeli genocide of the Palestinian people.

If a ceasefire is not achieved the international community will be an inert witness of the extermination of the Palestinian people, said Cuban Permanent Representative at the UN Gerardo Penalver Portal at the General Assembly’s session in New York about the use of the veto under the title “The situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian question” - Security Council, 9522nd meeting.

A release by the Cuban Foreign Ministry reads that the Cuban diplomat explained that during the 90-day escalation against Gaza, the Israeli forces have murdered over 23 thousand Palestinians, including over nine thousand children.

Penalver Portal, who is first deputy foreign minister, affirmed his country’s willingness to contribute to the legitimate international efforts to put an end to the current conflict and he also regretted a second resolution passed last December 22 by the UN Security Council on the situation in Palestine, which did not include a call to a ceasefire to facilitate the handling of humanitarian aid to the Gaza population.
