South Leaders’ Summit Called for December in Dubai

Havana, Sept 19 (ACN) The Group of 77 plus China called a Summit of South Leaders for December 2nd in Dubai, during the Conference of the Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP 28).

In his remarks at the United Nations as pro-tempore president of the G-77 plus China, Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel said that the forum will allow to articulate the positions of the coordination mechanism at the highest level, in the context of climate negotiations.

Cuba will not spare efforts to boost the creative potential, influence and leadership of the G-77 plus China alliance, said Diaz-Canel and noted that the South Leaders’ Summit is an unprecedented initiative in the context of the Conference of the Parties.

The Cuban head of state described as priorities of the G-77 in the contest of COP 28 the global balance exercise and the operationalizing of the Loss and Damage Fund. The bloc will also focus on the definition of the framework for the Objective of Adaptation and the setting up of the new climate financing goal, fully pledged to the principle of common responsibilities, but differentiated.

COP 28 will reveal if beyond the speeches, there is real political will on the part of developed nations to reach the must-reach accords required in this regard, said the Cuban President.

The Debates at the UN General Assembly kicked off on Tuesday as part of the high-level segment of that body, running till September 26 in New York.
