BEIJING, China, Nov 25 (ACN) President Xi Jinping described as "an exemplary case of solidarity and cooperation between socialist countries" the ties between China and Cuba, the first country in the Western Hemisphere, he recalled, to establish diplomatic relations with the new China.
His words took place during the segment of official talks to which the accredited press had access to the activities in Beijing of the Cuban president, Miguel Diaz-Canel, who fulfilled a very busy agenda in the little more than 24 hours he was in the Chinese capital.
Xi Jinping considered that Cuba has always been ahead of the countries in the Latin American region in developing relations with China. Now we are, he said, at a new historic starting point. We are willing to continue working together with Cuba to deepen mutual political trust and expand practical cooperation.
The Chinese president spoke to his Cuban counterpart of "supporting each other in matters of mutual interest and strengthening coordination and cooperation in international affairs, with a view to advancing hand in hand on the road of socialist construction with our own characteristics".
In response, the Cuban president pointed out that he was very grateful for the invitation to make this visit, the first by a head of state from Latin America and the Caribbean, after the successful celebration of the 20th Congress of the Communist Party of China.
Diaz-Canel assured that he assessed in a very positive way the theoretical and practical contributions of Xi Jinping's leadership at the head of the Central Committee of the Party in the construction of socialism with Chinese characteristics in the new era, which we consider a real motivation for all the progressive forces.
In his speech, the Cuban leader explained to Xi Jinping the difficult economic situation that Cuba is going through, due to the tightening of the economic, commercial and financial blockade of the United States and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic at the global level.
After these talks, which took place in the impressive Great Palace of the People -located right next to the well-known Tiananmen Square- the Chinese and Cuban delegations signed several agreements aimed at strengthening economic relations.
On this day -marked by strong restrictions due to an outbreak of COVID-19 that kept the President's visit under a closed epidemic bubble scheme- Diaz-Canel also held meetings with the President of the National People's Congress, Li Zhanshu, and Premier Li Keqiang.
In the midst of all these important meetings, limited by time and also by a pandemic that on this side of the world seems to be gaining force, the President did not forget to pay tribute to the martyrs of the Chinese people in the legendary Tiananmen Square, another sign of respect to this nation that, more than 13,000 kilometers away, continues to be a sister nation.
