Cuba finishes seventh at women’s handball of Asuncion 2025

HAVANA, Cuba, Aug 15 (ACN) After four losses, around 300 minutes on the field, 182 goals conceded, and 117 scored, Cuba won this match, defeating Mexico 34-25 today and securing seventh place in the event.

On the final day of the competition, the Cuban team found some firsts, after leading 15-11 at halftime, winning both periods, finishing with an attacking effectiveness above 50 percent, scoring over thirty goals, and, unlike the rest of the match, rising in the decisive stage of the match.

Jorge Coll's team distributed their offensive efforts more effectively, as evidenced by seven goals from the wings, 14 from the edge of the box and another four from long-range shots.

Maria Mazorra stood out individually, with nine goals, and eight from Lietis Beltran.

Once again, the Mexicans resorted to increasing their pressure through a 4-2 formation, which allowed them to level the score just ten minutes into the second half.

However, this time, Cubans responded and regained control of the match, especially by limiting the productivity of Yuridia Arenas (eight goals) and Isabella De Leon (six goals), leaders of the Mexican squad.

The victory was also forged from their own net, thanks to 15 saves, nine of them in the first half, by Anneris Zulueta, who completed the hour of play between the posts.

The Caribbean team took revenge for the defeat suffered in the group stage, which at the time had a score of 34-27, and condemned their current rivals to the bottom of the standings.

Therefore, those involved in Group A will occupy the two top spots, given the title battle between Brazil and Argentina, as well as the last two spots with Cuba and Mexico.
