HAVANA, Cuba, Oct 25 (ACN) Cuba defeated the Dominican Republic 8-2 in a game played at the Andre Rodgers Stadium in Nassau, Bahamas, and maintained its undefeated record in two games in the 6th Caribbean Baseball Cup.
Cubans, who had defeated St. Martin in their debut with an 8-0 score, continued hitting well on offense and with a 10-strikeout attack they defeated the champions of the first two editions, who suffered their second setback yesterday against Curaçao.
Determined to defend the crown they won last year, the Caribbean nation's players put together a four-strikeout streak in innings two and three to win the game early on.
The victory went to the records of starter Albert Valladares, who pitched five innings with only one clean score allowed and three strikeouts.
Sammy Benitez and Rafael Orlando Perdomo supported their team's success.
According to the rules of the competition, Friday, Cubans will play against the U.S. Virgin Islands, a team that lost 1-3 yesterday to the Bahamas, an opponent they will face on Saturday before closing the qualifying phase on Sunday against Curacao.
On Monday, the two best-placed teams in this round will play for the trophy and the bronze medal for the third and fourth place finishers.
