HAVANA, Cuba, Sep 13 (ACN) Cuban triple jumper Leyanis Perez, world indoor runner-up, will compete today in the final of the Diamond League of athletics 2024, to be held in Brussels, Belgium.
Perez, silver medalist in the world indoor event held in Glasgow, Scotland, last March, will seek the desired prize in the triple jump, an event in which she will have five rivals who will also try to reach the award.
Among her main rivals will be Jamaican Shanieka Ricketts, who won the silver medal at the recent Olympic Games in Paris 2024 and at the universal competition in Eugene, United States, two years ago.
In the qualifying phase of this diamond event, the Cuban young athlete won three stops, to reaffirm herself as one of the serious contenders to win in the final.
Her last triumph was achieved last July in the Principality of Monaco, France, where she obtained an excellent mark of 14.96 meters (m) in her fifth attempt, only two centimeters away from her personal best.
At the beginning of last June, Perez was victorious in the seventh stop in Stockholm, Sweden, where she reached 14.67 meters and on May 25 in the U.S. city of Eugene, the Cuban young triple jumper won in the fifth stop of that competition with 14.73 meters in her first attempt, in what was her debut in the current edition of that tournament.
Fifth in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, a competition in which she finished below expectations, and winner of the bronze medal in the World Outdoor Athletics Championships held in Budapest, Hungary, last year, now the Caribbean athlete will have the chance to take revenge for what happened in Paris.
