Diaz Canel highlights first Cuban medal at Paris 2024 Paralympic Games



 HAVANA, Cuba, Sep 2 (ACN) Sprinter Yamel Luis Vives won the silver medal in the 100-meter flat race, category T44, with a time of 11.20 seconds, at the 17th edition of the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, to be held at the Grand Palais in the City of Light.

With this result, Vives brought Cuba's first medal in the Parisian multisport event.

In this regard, Miguel Diaz-Canel, first secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and president of the country, said that the silver medal won by Yamel Luis Vives, the first medal of Cuba at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, is enormous.

Yes we can, this champion proved it, said the head of state on X, on the result of Vives in the final of the 100 meters race, category T44.

In his message, the president also stressed that the athlete, a native of Palmira, in the central province of Cienfuegos, reached this achievement in his first Paralympic Games, his second international competition.

On Sunday, in the final of the 100 meters’ category T44, the favorite, the South African Mpumelelo Mhlongo, world record holder, won with 11.12 seconds (sec), followed by the Cuban Vives, improving his personal and season's best times.
