HAVANA, Cuba, Aug 28 (ACN) The six Cubans who took to the ring in Havana’s Ciudad Deportiva won their bouts in the IBA Champions’ Night—the first professional match organized in the island in more than 60 years—which marked both International Boxing Day and the 50th anniversary of the first IBA World Boxing Championships held in this city.
Cuba’s two-time Olympic champions Arlen López and Julio César La Cruz won their fights against the Dominican José Luis Tejeda and the Uzbek Madiyar Saydrakhimov, respectively, the former by TKO in the second round and the latter by unanimous decision.
Earlier, world runner-up Saidel Horta (57 kg) beat the Russian Ruslan Belousov and three-time world champion Lazaro Alvarez (63.5 kg) defeated the Uzbek Mujibillo Tursonov, both by unanimous decision.
On their end, Paris 2024 champion Erislandy Alvarez (63.5 kg) achieved a unanimous victory over the Colombian José Ignacio Muñoz, whereas two-time Olympic champion Roniel Iglesias (67 kg) outmatched the Armenian Gurgen Madoyan by split decision.
