Cuban high jumper fails to reach Olympic final

PARIS, France, 7 Aug ACN) A great effort marked by his best result this year was not enough for the Cuban Luis Enrique Zayas to make it to the final of the high jump event of the 2024 Olympic Games.

An injury that tampered with his preparation to compete in Paris affected Zayas’s performance to the point that he finished 14th in the qualifying round with 2.24 m.

"Rest assured that I did my best," he said as he walked out of a crowded Stade de France. “I've only been training for about 10 weeks, and not even at a 100% capacity in the first few weeks. I think the hardest thing today was to find the rhythm of the run, especially as the bar began to rise."

Only five of the 31 competitors managed to jump over 2.27m, a limit two centimeters short of the required mark to advance directly to the final.
