Díaz-Canel to Mijaín: “So proud of you, champion!”

HAVANA, Cuba, Aug 6 (ACN) “There is only one man in the world who has reached Olympic glory five times and that is you, the Cuban Mijaín! We are so proud of you, champion!”, President Miguel Díaz-Canel wrote in a post on X after Cuban Greco-Roman wrestler Mijaín López beat the Chilean Yasmani Acosta—of Cuban origin—and achieved his fifth victory in Olympic Games to the joy of the entire nation.

“Your five Olympic gold medals are the best tribute to Cuban sports and to the upcoming 98th birthday of its prime promoter and greatest inspiration: Fidel Castro,” Díaz-Canel added, thanking López for his loyalty, talent and dedication and for his golden heart as a Cuban warrior.

In his message, the President referred to some comments made before the outstanding athlete finished his performance in Paris 2024 “by those who never imagined what you’re capable of and said that you had to lose a lot of weight, you’re already 41 years old, etc. But you said it yourself: what Mijaín promises, Mijaín delivers”.

Other Cuban leaders joined in the celebration and congratulated López on his gold medal, including Esteban Lazo Hernández, president of the National Assembly of People's Power and of the Council of State, and Political Bureau member Roberto Morales Ojeda, Secretary of Organization of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba.

At the end of the long-awaited fight, Lopez received personal congratulations from Thomas Bach, president of the International Olympic Committee, who also enjoyed the match and the feat accomplished by the Cuban.
