Cuban judokas Ortiz and Granda lose in second bout at Paris 2024

ACN - Cuba

PARIS, Aug 2 (ACN) Cubans Idalis Ortiz, in over 78 kilograms (kg), and Andy Granda (+100 kg), suffered costly setbacks today in their second judo bout at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Ortiz, owner of four Olympic medals, with one gold, two silver and one bronze, and flag bearer of the Cuban delegation, along with boxer Julio Cesar La Cruz, could not overcome the challenge of Serbia's Milica Zabic.

The island's judo star lost in the eighth finals by a three-shot caution to Zabic, who has now won three of the five duels between the two.
In her debut at the Campo de Marte arena, the Cuban judoka won by Ippon by applying a strangulation technique to Tulika Maan, from India, according to the official website of the competition.

Winner of eight medals in World Championships (2-2-4), Ortiz decided that fight in her favor in just 28 seconds of action, demonstrating her superiority against a lower level opponent.

Also for Cuba, Granda, world champion in Tashkent 2022, lost in a very close fight with the Japanese Tatsuru Saito, precisely whom he defeated for the world title two years ago, so the Japanese got his revenge.

That quarterfinal duel lasted almost eight minutes, the four minutes of regulation time, together with the extra time (golden point), when Saito scored a Waza-Ari to win.
Despite the defeat, the Cuban reached the repechage and still has options to at least fight for one of the bronze medals.
