PARIS, France, Jul 31 (ACN) Boxer Saidel Horta (-57 kilograms), runner-up in the 2023 World Championship in Tashkent, lost to the Kyrgyzstani Munarbek Seitbek in his first appearance in the 33rd Olympic Games.
Horta, who also finished second in the 2023 Pan Am Games held in Chile, won the first round rather easily but let up in the second to the point that the judges voted in favor of Seitbek.
In the third round, however, the referee stopped the fight because Horta was bleeding profusely from a deep cut on his face, so the judges gave the victory to his contender and, therefore, Cuba lost its second boxer in Paris 2024, since two-time Olympic winner Julio C. La Cruz also lost in his first presentation.
Throughout history, Cuban boxing has notched up 78 medals—41 of them gold—by far the island’s top winner of titles, followed by athletics (45), judo (37), wrestling (27) and fencing (10).
