Cuba finished with a silver medal at closing day of Ibero-American Athletics Cup



HAVANA, Cuba, May 13 (ACN) Cuba closed with a silver medal the last day of the Ibero-American Athletics Championships 2024, held in Cuiaba, Mato Grosso, Brazil, where it also won three bronze medals.

On Sunday, the triple jumper Andy Echavarria finished second in his discipline with a mark of 16.93 meters (m), to follow Brazil's Almir Dos Santos (17.31 m) on the podium; while the bronze medal was won by Colombia's Geiner Moreno (16.54 m).

With this result in the triple jump, Echavarria achieved the best performance among the six Cuban athletes who competed in the tournament.

On Saturday, Silinda Morales finished third in the discus throw with a record of 58.16 m, behind the local Izabela Rodriguez (63.60 m) and Andressa Oliveira (60.37 m), winners of gold and silver, respectively.


In the men's discus, the Island's Mario Diaz took the bronze with 61.38 m, obtained in the first attempt.

Spain's Diego Casas (61.91 m) deserved the silver prize and the host Wellington Fernandez (62.31 m) won the title, according to the YouTube broadcast of the competition.

Also on Saturday, long jumpers Alejandro Parada and Maikel Vidal were left off the awards podium, placing fourth and fifth, in that order.
