Cuban freestyle wrestlers Herin and Sanz today for Olympic quota to Paris

 

HAVANA, Cuba, May 10 (ACN) Cuban freestyle wrestlers Laura Herin, 53 kilograms (kg), and Yaynelis Sanz (57 kg), will seek today the Olympic quota for Paris 2024 in the world wrestling qualifiers, to be held in Istanbul, Turkey, until May 12.

Herin, silver medalist at the Pan American Games in Santiago de Chile 2023 and gold medalist at the Central Caribbean Games in San Salvador, also last year, will debut against Azerbaijan's Gultakin Shirinova.

Her teammate Sanz, champion in the continental event of that combat sport in Acapulco, Mexico, in 2022, will debut against the Romanian Kateryna Zhydachevska, according to the official site of the competition.

Both will try to advance to the next round and to achieve the coveted place to the summer event they will have to be among the top three in each of their divisions.

On Thursday, in Greco-Roman Daniel Gregorich (87 kg), winner of the multisport event in Santiago de Chile, lost in his debut against the Georgian Lasha Gobadse.

So far, 10 tickets have been secured in wrestling for the Island, with five Greco -Roman athletes, three men's freestyle athletes and two women's athletes.

The world pre-Olympic in Turkey will be the last of the six qualifying events for Paris, and will grant 54 spots, three in each weight class.

In Greco-Roman style, Cuba's Kevin de Armas (60 kg), Luis Orta (67 kg), Yosvanys Peña (77 kg), Gabriel Rosillo (97 kg) and Mijain Lopez (130 kg) have already guaranteed their places.

Completing the group are Milaymis Marin (76 kg) and Yusneylys Guzman (50 kg), along with Alejandro Valdes (65 kg), Geandry Garzon (74 kg) and Arturo Silot (97 kg), all in the free specialty.
