Cuban volleyball beach duo Diaz-Alayo got silver at Varadero circuit stage



HAVANA, Cuba, May 5 (ACN) Cuban beach duo Noslen Diaz-Jorge Luis Alayo won the silver medal at the men's tournament of the North, Central America and Caribbean Confederation (Norceca) Circuit, held at the Barcelo Solymar Arenas Blancas resort in Varadero.

Diaz and Alayo unexpectedly fell with a tight 0-2 score (13-21 and 20-22) in the final against the US duo Drost-Caldwell, while the main Cuban female pairing of Maikelin Drik-Amanda Armenteros finished fourth, after losing in the hard-fought match for the bronze medal, with a 1-2 score (17-21, 21-16 and 13-15) against the US team Harwar and De Berd.

According to the website www.norceca.net, the two Cuban pairs arrived at the closing day as undefeated, a condition they lost on Sunday to conclude with positive balances of 6-1 and 5-2, respectively, and as leaders of groups A of the preliminaries, overall performances that guaranteed them 288 and 224 points for the ranking, in that order.

The other Cuban men's duo of Damian Gomez and Elbis Veranes finished with 144 points in ninth place, after beating the Salvadoran Guardado twin brothers 2-0.

A similar result was achieved by the second women's duo of Kailin Garrido and Yenifer Rivera (144 points), but with a 2-0 win (24-22 and 21-14) against Bennett and Buckner, from the Virgin Islands.

Cuba's third women's pair of Mileidys Paret and Selena Spek (112 points) finished fifteenth by disposing 2-0 (21-14, 21-11) of Gumbs Shajunee-Dyer Shanicia from Saint Kitts and Nevis.
