Cuba debuts today at Pan American Badminton Championships

HAVANA, Cuba, Apr 10 (ACN) Cuban badmintonist Taymara Oropesa will make her debut today at the Pan American Badminton Championships in Guatemala, an event marking the end of the Olympic qualifying process in the continent.

Oropesa, third at the Pan Am Games and second at the Central American and Caribbean Games—both held last year in Chile and El San Salvador, respectively—will be opposite the local Nikte Alejandra Sotomayor in the women's singles event.

Oropesa and Sotomayor had been face to face in the final match of the Giraldilla International Badminton Tournament in Havana in March, where the Cuban won, albeit not without great effort.

Her victory then gave Oropesa another 1,700 points for the world ranking, a figure she will try to improve in this tournament, which will grant 7,000 points to the winners of each of the five events in competition.
