Cuba wins three bronze medals and six semifinalists at Boxing Cup in Dominican Republic



HAVANA, Cuba, Mar 20 (ACN) Cuba won three bronze medals in the continuation of the Independence Boxing Cup that has been taking place since March 18 in Santiago de los Caballeros, Dominican Republic.

Cubans Osvaldo Diaz, in the 57 kilograms (kg), Rogelandy Delis (63.5 kg) and Jose Manuel Soto (80 kg) won the bronze medals on Tuesday.

Diaz defeated Ecuador's Jonathan Murillo by RSC in the first round, while Delis and Soto defeated Puerto Rico's Giovan Melendez and Eliezer Brito by 5-0, respectively.

With these results, the three advanced to the semifinals on Wednesday, in a day in which they will be joined by their teammates, Giorvis Salfran (51 kg), Jorge Daniel Forcades (71 kg) and two-time national champion Nelson Williams (92 kg), who will seek the victories that will ensure them the silver medals.

According to the program for this afternoon-evening, Salfran, Diaz, Delis, Forcades, Soto and Williams will face Dominicans Mario Lavegar and Rodrigo Marte, in that order, Puerto Rican Julian Ortiz, Freudi Franco, Ecuadorian Johnny Hurtado and host Estarlin Guzman, respectively.

Cuban delegation is completed with coaches Juan Hernandez Sierra, Emiliano Chirino Alvarez and Julio Lazaro Mena Diaz.
