World Indoor Athletics Championships Glasgow 2024 kicks off today

HAVANA, Cuba, Mar 1 (ACN) The 19th World Indoor Athletics Championships, to be held in Glasgow, Scotland, will kick off today until March 3, with 651 athletes registered in representation of 133 countries.

With the attendance of seven Olympic champions, this strong competition will be celebrated, in which there are also 18 athletes who will defend their title from the last edition in Belgrade, Serbia, two years ago.

Among that group is Cuban triple jumper Lazaro Martinez, who will be seeking to repeat his crown, in addition to Cristian Napoles, Leyanis Perez and Liadagmis Povea, all of them also in the triple jump.

Of these four exponents, three were medalists in the universal outdoor competition held in Budapest, Hungary, last August.

These are the cases of Martinez, winner of the silver medal, as well as Perez and Napoles, who won the bronze medal, while Povea finished sixth.

Among the attractions of the competition will be six world record holders, such as U.S. athletes Ryan Crouser (shot put) and Grant Holloway (60 meters hurdles), Ethiopia's Gudaf Tsegay (3,000 meters), Sweden's Armand Duplantis (pole vault), the Netherlands' Femke Bol (400 meters) and Norway's Karsten Warholm (400 meters).
