Cuban chess champion loses in first day of national tournament

HAVANA, Cuba, Feb 6 (ACN) Cuban Cesar Alejandro Perez scored the distinctive point at the beginning of the National Absolute Chess Championship by defeating the defending champion, Elier Miranda.

He achieved his success leading white pieces and can be considered the only surprise at the beginning of an event in which there were seven wins in the 13 games played.

Based in the eastern city of Holguin, the followers of the event enjoyed the victories of some of the favorites such as Carlos Daniel Albornoz, Luis Ernesto Quesada and Omar Almeida.

Albornoz, rey en las versiones de 2019 y 2020, superó a Luis Daniel Rodríguez, al tiempo que Quesada ejercía dominio sobre el veterano Juan Borges y Almeida ante el villaclareño Jerzy Jesús Pérez.

The winners list was completed with Rider Diaz, Diasmany Otero and Cristian Vitier.

Tuesday, during the second round at the Eradio Dominguez Provincial Academy, the most interesting matches seem to be Albornoz vs. Rider and Quesada-Vitier.

The competition to define the Cuban champion will be played under the 10-round Swiss System. The winner will be assured a place in the team that will represent the Island in the Chess Olympiad of Budapest 2024.
