Cuban eastern province's women boxing team wins national tournament



HAVANA, Cuba, Jan 23 (ACN) With 17 points, the eastern province of Santiago de Cuba won the historic 1st National Women's Boxing Tournament, which was held in Havana's Rafael Trejo Hall with the participation of boxers from 11 provinces.

The event was held in six divisions: 50, 54, 57, 60, 66 and 75 kilograms, and the teams from Sancti Spiritus, Artemisa, Ciego de Avila and the special municipality of Isle of Youth did not participate.

Villa Clara (1-1-1), Guantanamo (1-0-2) and Cienfuegos (0-1-2) also finished with three medals, occupying the third to fifth places with 11, 10 and nine points, in that order.

The medalists at the 24th Central American and Caribbean Games of San Salvador 2023, Legnis Cala, from Havana (silver, 57 kg) and Yaquelin Estornell, from Guantanamo (bronze, 75 kg), won titles.

The remaining gold medalists were Karen L. Cantillo (HAB, 50 kg); Dayana Nuñez (SCU, 54); Melani de la Caridad Girado (VCL, 60) and Dayira Mesa (SCU, 75).

From this group of participants, Cala and Estornell will represent Cuba in the qualifier to be held in the Italian city of Busto Arsizio, February 29 to March 12, with a view to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
