ANCTI SPIRITUS, Cuba, Jan 9 (ACN) The 60th edition of the Playa Giron National Boxing Tournament will begin today with the participation of 109 boxers from all over the country, divided into 11 divisions, to be held at the Yayabo Hall in this central city.

On Monday, the technical meeting was held at the Rancho Hatuey Hotel, and it was reported that the 69 kilograms division will be the most crowded (18), while the lowest number of boxers will be the super heavyweight division, with only four.

In addition, thirteen men are registered in 57 and 81 kilograms, while there will be 12 contenders in 75 and 64 kilograms, the latter with a presumably world-class final between the experienced three-time world champion Lazaro Alvarez and the young world runner-up Erislandy Alvarez.

This will be the Playa Giron 2023 -it could not be held last year-, while the 2024 edition is scheduled to be held in December, once the Paris 2024 Olympic Games are over.

Alberto Puig de la Barca, president of the Cuban boxing federation, said that for the first time in the history of these competitions, the use of moustaches, beards and moderate tattoos will be allowed, as it is exhibited in world boxing.

With its excellent team headed by five-time world champion and double Olympic gold medalist Julio César La Cruz (92 kgs), the team from the central eastern province of Camagüey aspires to win its eleventh title.
