Obtaining 20 tickets in eight disciplines for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games stands out in the closing of 2023 of Cuban sport, as well as the fulfillment in the five multiple events, with a highlight in the Pan American Games in Santiago de Chile.
Managers, coaches, together with the medical team, athletes and the scientific potential, redouble their efforts and move forward with the pride of being faithful representatives of the people, in the midst of economic limitations, mainly due to the criminal and reinforced U.S. blockade against Cuba, and the complicated preparation for so many competitions, including the qualifiers for the Paris event.
It is logical not to forget the sport from the base as a right of the people, one of the many achievements of the Revolution and its maximum leader, Commander in Chief Fidel Castro, in which steps are taken, not the desired ones, but it is also taken into account and progress is achieved despite the difficulties.
Regarding the quotas for Paris 2024, the classifications in athletics stand out, with six, wrestling (4), boxing (3), canoeing (2), table tennis (2), shooting (1), modern pentathlon (1) and cycling (1).
It is no secret that sport is going through a shortage of material, financial and technological resources, but that has not stopped it, since with creativity and innovation our athletes manage to reach the podium.
Recently, Jose Antonio Miranda, general director of high performance of the National Institute of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation ( INDER by its Spanish acronym), emphasized that in the current circumstances, athletes must be attended in a personalized way.
"We cannot work in a general way, with complete sports, but with the individualities that have potentialities to be able to keep us among the top 20 countries in Paris 2024. There is no other way to distribute the budget and conceive the critical path.
"We have about 15 athletes who must receive all the priority and attention; a multisectoral work in the little time we have left for training and preparation."
In relation to the multiple events, although distant from the historical results in some cases, the 5th place in the medal list of the Pan American Games in Santiago de Chile, with 69 medals, 30 gold, 22 silver and 17 bronze, and the 7th place in the Parapan American Games (35/12-8-15) stand out for all the above mentioned.
Also outstanding is the 3rd place in the Central American and Caribbean Games in San Salvador (196/74-59-63), 2nd place in the Alba Games in Venezuela (194/76-65-53) and 4th place in the Central Caribbean School Games, also in Venezuela (10/5-3-2), in all cases with 100% Cuban delegations and the non-participation in all the disciplines called by the organizers.
To continue increasing or adding rankings or direct classifications in different tournaments is the goal of the sport focusing on Paris, where again the combat and athletics will have the main responsibility, which will surely be joined by others.
