HAVANA, Cuba, Dec 19 (ACN) United World Wrestling (UWW) declared Cuba’s Luis Orta (67 kg) Greco-Roman Wrestler of the Year.
UWW’s website remarks that Orta—Olympic champion in Tokyo 2020—deserved the award in light of his excellent results in 2023, among them the victory that earned him the gold medal at the World Championships held in Serbia in September.
Other awardees included Aisuluu Tynybekova (Kyrgyzstan), elected as the best female athlete of the year, and the Russian-born Bahraini Akhmed Tazhudinov, both freestyle wrestlers.
His 2023 campaign also had golds at the Pan-American Games, the Central American and Caribbean Games, and the Henri Deglane tournament.
