Several Cubans stalk the leaders of Carlos Torre chess tournament

HAVANA, Cuba, Dec 17 (ACN) As Cuban chess player Carlos Daniel Albornoz holds the best position, some of his teammates are following close behind the four leaders of the Carlos Torre Memorial chess tournament, currently under way in Merida, Mexico.

Albornoz, first in the Cuban ranking, boasts three of four possible points after his tie with the American Kyron Griffith and his victory over the Mexican Benjamin Góngora, which took him up to the fifth position in the so-called Masters’ group, behind the incumbent champion Jose Eduardo Martinez (Peru), the Cuban representing Mexico Juan Carlos Gonzalez, Jose Gabriel Cardoso (Colombia) and Azer Mirzoev (Azerbaijan).

As a rule, the Carlos Torre Memorial marks the end of the season for most of America's top chess players, although it also gathers lower level players and children in the U7 and U14 categories.
