Cuban wrestling gala of 2023 to be held today in Havana



HAVANA, Cuba, Dec 8 (ACN) The Pedro Val in memoriam Cuban Wrestling Gala will be held today at the Ciudad Deportiva coliseum in Havana, with 13 bouts and the recognition of the best wrestlers of 2023.

In what will be the last competition of the year for Cuban wrestlers, several young and other athletes with important results at the Central Caribbean and continental level this season will be seen in action today.

Among those who will participate is world bronze medalist Alejandro Valdes, in the 65 kilograms (kg) freestyle, who will compete against Jean Carlos Olivero.

Along with Valdes, champion of the Pan American Games of Lima 2019 and Santiago de Chile 2023, will be in the female division Laura Herin (53 kg), owner of the silver metal in the Chilean capital.

There will also be young promising athletes on rising stars who will surely want to prove their conditions for bigger challenges in the future Olympic cycle.

Regarding the absence of several of the main figures of the national team, Raul Trujillo, head coach of the Greco-Roman modality, told the Cuban News Agency that in the case of his pupils it is because in January they will compete in a tournament in Europe.

We made the decision that they should not participate to avoid any kind of injury and give them rest, he said in reference to Luis Orta and Gabriel Rosillo, world champions in Belgrade, Serbia, last September, and Oscar Pino, bronze medalist in that strong event.
