Cuban Yunier keeps his successful path in paretenis table in Santiago de Chile 2023



 HAVANA, Cuba, Nov 17 (ACN) Cuban table tennis player Yunier Fernandez maintained the successful path at the 7th Parapan American Games of Santiago de Chile 2023, by defeating today 3-0 Mexico's Fernando Eberhard, based at the Olympic Training Center.

Fernandez, from the TT 1 class, achieved Friday his second victory in the preliminary phase, now with easy sets of 11-7, 11-6 and 11-8, after beating on Thursday the US Michael Godfrey, also 3-0 in his debut.

With these results, he ratifies himself as the main winning athlete for Cuban paratenis, due to his current competitive form and his condition of champion of the previous edition of Lima 2019 and owner of two other silver medals and one bronze, which makes him the possible first gold medalist of Cuba in the Games.

Meanwhile, Yanelis Marcelina Silva (TT 1-3) was unable to defeat Mexico's Edith Cigala in the quarterfinals, falling 1-3 and could not advance to the semifinals and finished 5th out of 13 competitors.

So far, Yanelis was undefeated in her two matches, defeating the experienced Brazilian Catia Da Silva, 3-2, and the Colombian Manuela Guapi, 3-0, in that order.

Both, seated in wheelchairs in categories that gather para-athletes with very limited movements with the torso and legs and moderately limited of the shoulders and arms (TT 1), and moderately limited of arms and very limited in the legs or in a high degree of half of the torso and legs (TT 3).

On Thursday, the other Cuban present in the Chilean multisport event, Osviel Nodalse (TT 3) lost in his three matches, against Uruguayan Gonzalo Acosta, 1-3, Argentine Carlos Bienati, 1-3 and Brazilian David Andrade, 0-3, respectively.
