Cuban boxers debut today in the Pan Am Games

SANTIAGO DE CHILE, Chile, Oct 19 (ACN) The Cuban men’s and women’s boxing teams debut today in the 2023 Pan American Games with Saidel Horta (57kg), Fernando Arzola (+92 kg) and Arianne Imbert (66 kg).

Horta and Arzola—silver medalists in the last World Championships—and Imbert—third in the Central American and Caribbean Games in San Salvador—will seek Cuba’s first victories against Miguel Fernando Vega (Mexico), Charles Jno (Dominica) and María Altagracia Moronta (Dominican Republic), respectively.

Rolando Acebal, head coach of the men's team, said that Cuba brought both young and experienced boxers to compete with strong figures from U.S.A., Brazil, Colombia and the Dominican Republic, but held to be confident that the young ones cannot be ruled out from the podium.

The Cuban boxing team won eight gold medals in the 2019 Games in Lima to finish first, way ahead of runner-up Colombia, whose boxers won two titles.
