HAVANA, Cuba, Sep 3 (ACN) Cuba’s top triathlete Leslie Amat started for Olympic Games at the 2023 Americas Triathlon Championships for women in Veracruz, Mexico, but could only participate in the 1,500-meter swimming competition, which she finished in 20:27 min, plus 26 seconds for the swim/bike change.
Thus was Amat’s first step to notch up the coveted ticket to Paris 2024 under the IOC’s “new flag” rule that approves athletes holding the best ranking positions among those who failed to qualify directly to Paris 2024.
Although the reasons are not officially known, Amat was the only one who abandoned the competition. The American Michelle Stratton did not complete the race either, but it was because she lagged a whole lap behind the other swimmers.
The Americas Triathlon Championships gathered 39 and 15 triathletes in the elite and U23 categories respectively.
