HAVANA, Cuba, May 16 (ACN) We deeply regret the death of sports reporter and broadcaster Roberto Pacheco Martinez, said Miguel Diaz-Canel, First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and President of the Republic, on Twitter today.
The head of state highlighted Pacheco Martinez's witty style in describing the ball, a characteristic for which he will be remembered by several generations of Cubans.
Diaz-Canel assured that with his death, the 2018 National Radio Award winner leaves a very Cuban imprint in sports narration.
A native of the town of Caimito, now Artemisa province, Roberto Pacheco Martinez died Monday at 81.
Pacheco Martinez participated in six Olympic Games, 11 Pan American Games and an identical number of Central American and Caribbean Games; his voice was present in more than 50 national baseball series, as well as in dissimilar international events through the microphones of the Cuban radio.
Among other awards, he received the Distinction for National Culture and the Barbados Martyrs Distinction, the Abelardo Raidi Lifetime Achievement Award granted by the Sports Journalists Association of America in 2020.
