Cuba mourns death of football king Pelé

HAVANA, Cuba, Dec 30 (ACN) The first secretary of the Central Committee of the Cuban communist party and president of the country, Miguel Diaz-Canel, mourned the death of former Brazilian football player Edson Arantes do Nascimento, Pele, considered one of the best in the history of that sport, and an icon of the style known as Jogo Bonito (Beautiful Game).

On Twitter, the president sent condolences to the Brazilian people and to the family and friends of the so-called king of football, who died on Thursday, at 82, at the Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein, in Sao Paulo.

Cuba also mourns Pelé, said Diaz-Canel in his message, and stressed that neither the years nor death can erase the mark of his style in football Latin America and the world.

For his part, Osvaldo Vento Montiller, president of the National Institute of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation of Cuba ( INDER by its Spanish acronym), considered Pele's death an irreparable loss for sports in the world.

On behalf of the Cuban Association of that sport (AFC), Oliet Rodriguez, its president, expressed his feelings for the loss of a world football reference.

Born in Minas Gerais on October 23, 1940, Edson Arantes do Nascimento was a three-time world champion, in Sweden 1958, Chile 1962 and Mexico 1970.

He was suffering from colon cancer and had been hospitalized at Albert Einstein Hospital since November 29 to undergo a reevaluation of chemotherapy therapy for the tumor and treatment for a respiratory infection.
