HAVANA, Cuba, Dec 14 (ACN) Cuban swimmer Elisbet Gámez clocked less than 55 seconds for the first time in the 100-m freestyle event of the World Short Course Swimming Championships.
In a 25-meter pool in Melbourne, Australia, the 25-year-old Cuban registered 54.87 seconds and finished seventh in the sixth elimination heat and 34th in the overall classification of 65 athletes.
Gámez, who will also participate in the 200-m race, had a personal best 55.14, which she set in October during the National Championships in Thailand, where she was enjoying a FINA scholarship.
So far, the medal table shows Australia on the top, followed by United States and Italy.
