HAVANA, Cuba, Nov 30 (ACN) Cuba and the International Boxing Association (IBA) agreed to take steps to develop this sport in the country, during a meeting between Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel and IBA head Umar Kremlev where they also talked about the proposal that Cuba host International Boxing Day in 2023 and other issues.
Kremlev recognized that boxing has deep roots in Cuba since the 1st World Championship held in Havana in 1974 and pointed out the need to provide better conditions to the Cuban boxers, whom he described as outstanding, and the possibility that a boxing institute will be built in Cuba to train coaches and officials and organize special programs for the preparation of athletes. “Cuba is home to the best boxers in the world,” he said.
The visitor also suggested that Havana should host an event of the World Boxing Tour Diamond Best Series and stated his satisfaction regarding the support received for this and other projects.
Kremlev visited the national boxing school, where he learned about the preparation of the athletes, their living conditions, and assured that Cuba will soon receive gloves, headers and other implements from the IBA.
